Can a Visit to the Chiropractor Boost Fertility?
Infertility can be a frustrating and emotionally taxing condition for those trying to conceive. As such, many turn to alternative or complementary approaches in hopes of improving their chances of having a baby. One such approach gaining mainstream attention is chiropractic care. But can chiropractic adjustments actually help boost fertility? The answer is, unfortunately, no. The belief that chiropractic care can serve as as an effective fertility treatment is not supported by scientific evidence and can potentially mislead individuals seeking help for infertility.
Chiropractic care focuses on alignment of the spine and musculoskeletal system. It involves physically manipulating the spine and joints to improve nerve flow, blood circulation, and overall health. Proponents argue it removes blockages or misalignments that may be negatively impacting reproductive function. However, there is currently minimal scientific evidence to support the use of chiropractic methods for treating infertility. While a handful of small studies have suggested positive effects, larger, more robust clinical trials are needed to properly evaluate potential benefits.
The causes of infertility are complex and can stem from issues with ovulation, blocked fallopian tubes, poor sperm quality, uterine abnormalities, endometriosis, and more. These underlying problems likely won’t be resolved through spinal adjustments alone. Mainstream fertility treatments, such as medications to induce ovulation, artificial insemination, or IVF are more likely to address the root causes.
That said, I understand the appeal of wanting to try anything you think might help when struggling with infertility. If chiropractic care provides stress relief or comfort, there’s likely minimal harm in combining it with proven medical fertility treatments (though spinal manipulation should be avoided during pregnancy/ovarian stimulation). Just don’t view it as a fertility cure-all or replacement for consulting an OBGYN/reproductive endocrinologist. Always discuss any complementary approaches with your doctor to ensure safety and determine if they could interact with other fertility medications.
While more research is needed, the current evidence does not indicate chiropractic care significantly improves fertility outcomes. For couples battling infertility, I recommend focusing on proven treatments and lifestyle changes. But if chiropractic care provides mental relief on your journey, it likely won’t hurt when combined with standard medical care. Just be sure to consult your physician first and view it as a complementary approach rather than a standalone fertility solution.
